The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
