Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind attacks on sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
